Book Review: The Number of Love

                        by Roseanna M. White

I had been searching for a good, clean romance novel. Preferably historical and Christian/Catholic.

I came upon On the Wings of Devotion by Roseanna M. White. The second book in her Codebreakers series. But of course, you simply cannot read the second book without reading the first one. Who would even dream of doing such a thing, righhhhtt?

So anyway, it was my duty to search out Book 1 and, to be honest, I wasn’t as enthusiastic about it as I had been for Book 2 but I got it anyway, both books actually.

Andddd, I was pleasantly surprised!

Obviously, the cover is beautiful (and spoiler!!: the model’s outfit on the cover actually resembles the same outfit of Margot in the book. A detail I really appreciate) but more importantly, the book was magnificent!

This is my review on The Number of Love by Roseanna M. White.

On the Back:

The toughest puzzle she’ll have to solve might be the wishes of her own heart

Three years into the Great War, England’s greatest asset is their intelligence network – field agents risking their lives to gather information, and codebreakers able to crack German telegrams for hints of the enemy’s plans. Margot De Wilde thrives in the environment of the secretive Room 40, where she spends her days deciphering intercepted messages. But when her world is turned upside down by an unexpected loss, she discovers for the first time in her life that numbers aren’t enough.

Drake Elton returns wounded from the field, followed by an enemy who just won’t give up. He’s smitten quickly by the quick and brainy Margot, but soon the dangers of the war draw ever closer. Margot and Drake will have to team up to save themselves from the very secrets that brought them together.

My Review:

The Number of Love was amazing. The plot was very detailed (without all the silly nonsensical romance that many books seem to have these days). I learned so much about the Great War that I had never known before, it was so interesting to read something with actually facts that made you exercise your brain! And the best part? It was completely free of coarse language and/or carnal romance.

Margot, an intelligent and beautiful young lady, works in Room 40, “the intelligence hub of the Admiralty”. She’s a very serious character who takes everything literally making her incredibly sarcastic and a fun heroine. It was compelling to watch her slowly open her heart up to the Lord again where it had once been so easy before. The plot covers her struggles in going back to normalcy after tragedy strikes. Enter Drake, our hero!

All the characters that White created had intriguing personalities.

The antagonist’s side of the story was, surprisingly, just as interesting as the protagonist’s. Das Gespenst, as he is known, was very mysterious but you couldn’t help but pity him. I really loved the way his story ended, Margot’s reaction was Godly and admirable.

The romance in the story was also very sweet. White was able to bring God into Margot and Drake’s relationship beautifully. The two learned to rely on God and saw His work in both their lives. Both of them sacrificed something for the other which I feel is the right representation of romance compared to the “perfect love” that many novels portray.

Overall, it was an excellent novel that I enjoyed much more than I thought I would!

I look forward to reading more of Roseanna M. White’s creations (the ones I’ve read so far were just as good)! Five stars!
